Day Five: Wake Me Up Before You Scroll Scroll
Now that we have sufficiently beat the first three #SmartFreedom Challenge Rules and their necessity into our brains... and have either given up totally OR have started to ease into some comfort with the Ground Rules, let's Reeeeally get started!! The best way to change our whole day is to start in the morning! I hope you enjoy today's challenge... It is VERY Life-Changing! And addresses my personal worst offense against #SmartFreedom.
DAY 5 CHALLENGE: Buy an alarm clock!
(By Monday AM we will stop using our phones as morning alarm clocks.)
Why is this part of our challenge? Let's face it... our phones contain a lot more than just an alarm clock. By looking at our phone first thing in the morning we are bombarded by messages, emails, notifications, headlines, and all sorts of other time-stealers and peace-robbers. Think about it--do you want to be woken up by an unpleasant beeping or the entirety of the internet? Which will lead to a better start to the day? More peace? More quiet? It is much more likely that we will start our days in prayer with this simple change of habit.
Why It Is Important:
(1) You don't start your work day in bed 30 seconds after your third snooze. (2) You haven't judged anyone, envied anyone, or been sassy to anyone before getting out of bed. (3) You might actually take that 30 (sometimes 60) minutes of time wasted scrolling under the covers and turn it into--wait for it--prayer time!
What To Do With Your Hands (or in this case whole selves):
Let's ask two of my favorite fellas, St. Josemaría Escrivá:
Conquer yourself each day from the very first moment, getting up on the dot, at a fixed time, without yielding a single minute to laziness. If, with God’s help, you conquer yourself, you will be well ahead for the rest of the day. … The heroic minute. It is the time fixed for getting up. Without hesitation: a supernatural reflection and… up! The heroic minute: here you have a mortification that strengthens your will and does no harm to your body.–St. Josemaría Escrivá
That's right... just get up. When your alarm rings. No, but really. Here's what it looks like:
ALARM: Ring Ring Ring
YOU: "Thank you, Jesus for this day! Help me to radiate your love everywhere I go."
Feet touch ground.
And St. Paul:
"It is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed." Romans 13:11
