16 Days with Mark: Chapter 3

Aunt Katie

Gospel of Mark: Day 3

The third chapter of Mark is only 35 verses. Here are the highlights:

The Man with a Withered Hand

A Multitude by the Sea

Jesus Appoints the Twelve

Jesus and Beelzebul

The True Kindred of Jesus

Journaling Questions for Reflection

And He said to the man with the withered hand, "Come here (Mark 3:1)." Why do I hesitate when Jesus calls me? How is the Lord asking me to come closer? What parts of my heart feel withered?

And He looked around in anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, "Stretch out your hand (Mark 3:5)." How am I like the people in the synagogue? How do I put restrictions on Jesus' ability to heal me? Do I believe Jesus will heal me despite my own hardness of heart? What needs healing in my body? in my heart?

And He told his disciples to have a boat ready for Him because of the crowd, lest they should crush Him; for He had healed many, so that who had diseases pressed upon him to touch Him (Mark 3:9-10). The people of Jesus' time were desperate to see Him, touch Him, hear His word... we have access to the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ through the Eucharist--do I spend time with the Blessed Sacrament outside of mass? How can a develop a greater sense of urgency to see Jesus change my spiritual life? When was the last time I made a Holy Hour, a visit to the chapel, or attended a daily mass? When can I spend time with the Eucharist this week?

And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, "He is possessed by Beelzebul and by the prince of demons he casts out the demons (Mark 3:22)." The scribes tried to confuse the crowds about Jesus' teachings. How am I able to discern what is really God's voice? What voices am I listening to? Lies or Love? Do I hear a voice that calms, comforts, convicts, encourages, enlightens, leads, reassures, stills? Or do I hear a voice that obsesses, worries, condemns, discourages, confuses, pushes, frightens, rushes?

"Who are my mother and brethren (Mark 3:33)?" Jesus goes on to explain that anyone one who does the will of God is His mother and brethren, etc. Would I be counted in this number? How do I know if I'm following the will of God? What does detachment look like in my life? What priorities dictate my decisions? What or who is causing a distraction in my life?

Day 3 Challenge:

Spend 15 minutes in adoration or make a visit to a church. Bonus challenge: Make it to daily mass.
