Aunt Katie's Advent List
As we rush around during these precious weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we seek tiny bits of respite in order to prepare our hearts for 8lbs. 6oz. newborn baby Jesus. Here are 10 of Aunt Katie's recommendations for Advent resources! In no particular order...
NOTE: Most descriptions are borrowed from the resources themselves--because why mess with a perfect book blurb??
THE VIGIL PROJECT
The Vigil Project is a community of very faithful and talented artists (and friends of mine!) that collaborate to make music and resources for an authentic encounter with God and sincere prayer. This Advent and Christmas they are offering four experiences to deepen your prayer! (1) Watch the music videos. (2) Read the Prayer Booklets. (3) Engage your community in beauty. (4) And give the gift of music! Check it out HERE!
Ask Aunt Katie
The #SmartFreedom Challenge is back! During this season of preparation, AskAuntKatie.com will offer a Self-Guided 21-Day Advent Challenge. The Facebook Group and Daily Emails will resume for Lent, but it's easy to get started--here's the link!!
Rejoice! Advent Meditations with Mary
Father Mark Toups
Rejoice! journal is an Advent prayer resource with daily meditations on Mary's experience of the first Advent. Each week of Rejoice! presents a theme that allows you to dive deeply into the lessons Mary has to share about welcoming Jesus into her life. Together with the videos found on rejoiceprogram.com, these daily meditations will help you walk closer and closer to the ultimate goal of preparing for the coming of Jesus at Christmas.
The Magnificat Advent 2018 Companion
This rich spiritual companion will accompany you like a beloved friend through the four weeks of Advent with poignant scriptural reflections for each day of the season.
Anything Jacques Philippe!
Father Jacques Philippe
I cannot recommend Father Philippe enough!! Everything I have ever read by this French priest has made my heart, mind, and soul explode. Very simple, short reads!! These books also make great Christmas gifts!
Word of the Year
Ask Aunt Katie
One of the Advent practices that I have grown to love is to come up with a Word for the Year. Or phrase or theme, etc. This word is something that acts as an anchor, a root, a homebase for the next year. We get inundated with life, busyness, the mundane, wild twists and turns, and often forget ourselves during the course of the year. Click on the link above to learn how YOU can discern your word for 2019.
Abiding Together's Advent Series
Sister Miriam James Heidland, Heather Khym, and Michelle Benzinger
One of my favorite podcasts will explore what happens in the power of community and what it means to come together in a circle and champion one another and to offer a place to be seen, known, and celebrated this Advent!! The Abiding Together Ladies will be using the Visitation as the guiding scripture passage for this series and will have some amazing guests who will share their stories of fellowship.
Read a book!
Here are my top three or four or five recommendations: Fulton Sheen's Life of Christ (just the earliest chapters) or Fulton Sheen's The World's First Love, Edward Sri's Dawn of the Messiah, Brant Pitre's Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary, and Pope Benedict XVI's Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives.
Divine Intimacy: Meditations on the Interior Life for Every Day of the Liturgical Year
Father Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalen, O.C.D.
This incredible volume provides reflections for every day of the year from some of our most beautiful and holy Carmelite saints and doctors! It also makes an awesome Christmas gift!!
Every Sacred Sunday
Cassie Manning and Christie Peters
Two cool chicks that I met at the Edel Gathering, Kassie and Christie, launched Every Sacred Sunday last year! The first edition was awesome--so be sure to check out the second edition!! Every Sacred Sunday gives you the opportunity to reflect on the readings each Sunday and for Holy Days of Obligation. Get the most out of your mass preparation this liturgical year.
